Meditation for Men

Meditation for men

Three reasons why men should meditate

You’ve probably heard countless people boasting of the benefits of meditation. From Novak Djokovic to Hugh Jackman, it seems that everyone is doing it. And it appears they may be onto something! Meditation might just be the practice that takes your performance to the next level.

We all need to take care of ourselves – mind, body and spirit. Unfortunately, many men often neglect the mind and spirt part of the equation.

Here are our top 3 reasons why men should incorporate meditation into their lives.

1. Improves mental performance

One of the biggest drawcards of adopting a meditation practice is the boost to your productivity and creativity it provides. Meditation enhances focus, concentration and creative thinking. A study by Harvard researchers showed an increase in gray matter density in the hippocampus, the area of the brain which helps with learning and memory, as well as decreases in the amygdala, the brain region associated with fear, stress and anxiety. They even found regular meditation increases brain volume in areas that typically diminish with age.

2. Boosts physical health

Meditation literally changes how your body functions. Regular meditation strengthens your immune system, helping to ward off illness, as well as helping to reduce chronic pain. According to Herbert Benson, M.D., a cardiologist who has studied the effects of meditation, “The relaxation response [induced by meditation] helps increase metabolism, lowers blood pressure, and improves heart rate, breathing and brain waves.”

3. Improves sleep

Mediation is a safe and effective way to regulate your sleep. Individuals who meditate regularly report sleeping better than those who don’t. A recent peer-reviewed study published by the American Medical Association found that mindfulness mediation improves sleep quality and could help to combat insomnia.

Like learning any new skill, meditation takes practice. Whether you choose mindfulness, guided meditation or a mantra-based practice such as Vedic meditation, the key is to find something that works for you. It could just give you that boost you are looking for!
